Dr. David Coleman

Biography

David Coleman, MD, is an Emeritus Professor at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. He received his MD from the University of California, San Francisco, an MA from Yale University, and an AB from Stanford University. Dr. Coleman's research primarily focuses on macrophage activation and proliferation, where he has identified novel factors that induce macrophage phagocytic function and oxidative metabolism. His team discovered the production of Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony Stimulating Factor (GM-CSF) in non-immunological cell types, such as keratinocytes, glomerular mesangial cells, and respiratory epithelia. The research further delineates subcellular mechanisms of macrophage activation induced by GM-CSF, including effects on intracellular messenger pathways. Over the past 15 years, his work has also emphasized medical education and clinical practice, developing incentive plans for physician productivity at the affiliated VA Medical Center and creating effective policies for industry interactions. Additionally, Dr. Coleman's clinical responsibilities include serving as an inpatient medical attending and infectious disease consult attending at Boston Medical Center.
