Biography

David Coley’s recent book, Death Pearl Maiden: Plague, Poetry, England (Ohio State, 2019), awarded the 2020 Margaret Wade Labarge Prize for medieval studies by the Canadian Society of Medievalists. The book examines submerged discourses of plague in fourteenth-century English poetry, particularly in poems from MS Cotton Nero A.x. David’s monograph, Wheel Language: Representing Speech in Middle English Poetry, 1377-1422 (Syracuse, 2012), posits that the representation of spoken word in medieval English poetry serves as a powerful and efficacious act that critiques and creates social, political, and religious realities. His articles have been published in Studies in the Age of Chaucer, Journal of English and Germanic Philology, Chaucer Review, Exemplaria, Glossator, and Florilegium. He is a contributor to edited volumes such as Chaucer Trauma (Penn State, forthcoming 2025), Cambridge Companion to The Canterbury Tales (2020), and Premodern Ecologies in the Modern Literary Imagination (Toronto, 2019). In collaboration with Dr. Matthew Hussey, David is the co-creator of The Canterbury Fails, a biweekly podcast dedicated to reading marginal and lesser-known Old and Middle English literature and pairing literature with thematically appropriate cocktails.
