Biography

David graduated from the University of Glasgow with a BDS in 1996. He has periods in general dental practice and hospital dentistry in Bristol and Edinburgh, along with SHO posts in oral and maxillofacial surgery at St John’s in Livingston. He attained the FDS RCS (England) in 1999. Returning to Glasgow in 2000, he took up a clinical lectureship in dental public health while combining this with a specialist registrar training post across NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Argyll & Clyde Health Boards. He completed his MPH at the University of Glasgow in 2002, and in 2005 he attained his certificate of completion of specialist training in dental public health (FDS DPH RCS, FFPH). Awarded a PhD in 2008 for his research in the epidemiology of oral cancer from a socioeconomic perspective, he became a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow in 2008, later being appointed to a professorship in Dental Public Health in 2015. He has held various roles, including Honorary Consultant for Dental Public Health in NHS National Services Scotland and Public Health Scotland. David is currently the Director of the Oral Health Research Hub and leads the Community Oral Health Research Group at the Dental School, with extensive research interests in socioeconomic inequalities, cancer epidemiology, and health improvement policies.
