Biography

David Dobson is a Professor in the Department of Earth Materials at University College London (UCL). His research focuses on high-pressure experiments that investigate deep Earth minerals and rocks, especially as they relate to understanding the Earth's core. He collaborates with colleagues at UCL and the Bayerisches Geoinstitut to explore the behavior of materials under extreme conditions. His significant discoveries include new high-pressure phases of FeSi, a promising candidate material for the Earth's core. Furthermore, he contributes to the development of geodynamo models, which require insights into the viscosity and diffusivity of outer core liquids. His innovative use of high-pressure devices, such as multi-anvil presses and diamond cells, enables the exploration of material properties relevant to geophysical processes. Dobson's ongoing work also includes measuring the transport properties of mantle materials and developing new experimental techniques at ultrahigh pressures. He has been involved in significant collaborative projects that provide critical insights into the behavior of minerals and the dynamics of the Earth's interior.
