Biography

David C. Engerman is a scholar of twentieth-century international history, with dual training in American and Russian/Soviet history. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley in 1998. Engerman has authored several influential works, including 'Modernization from the Shore: American Intellectuals and the Romance with Russian Development' (Harvard University Press, 2003) and 'Know Your Enemy: The Rise and Fall of America's Soviet Experts' (Oxford University Press, 2009). His research spans a variety of topics related to history and development assistance, including co-editing the volume 'Staging Growth: Modernization, Development, and the Global Cold War' (University of Massachusetts Press, 2003), and the monograph 'Price Aid: Economic Cold War India' (Harvard, 2018). Engerman's ongoing research focuses on geopolitics, intellectual history, and international economic inequality in the latter half of the twentieth century. Previously, he was part of the faculty at Brandeis University for 19 years before joining Yale in 2018.
