David Ferenbach graduated in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh with an intercalated honours degree in Pathology. He completed his initial medical training and held Senior House Officer posts in Edinburgh and Glasgow before returning to Edinburgh in 2003 as a Specialist Registrar in Nephrology. He conducted his PhD under the supervision of Professors Hughes and Kluth, focusing on the role of macrophages in acute kidney injury. In 2013, he was awarded an Intermediate Clinical Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust to investigate mechanisms underlying altered susceptibility in aged kidneys to renal insults, collaborating with Harvard Medical School. His research has since centered on understanding the contributions of epithelial senescence to renal regeneration and fibrosis in the context of aging. In 2022, he received an MRC Senior Clinical Fellowship to explore the senescent cell signaling pathways using advanced spatial transcriptomic technologies. He is also an Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, participating in various collaborative projects with leading experts in the field.
