Biography

David Foster studied Physics at Imperial College, London, graduating with class honours and undertaking postgraduate research in the Applied Optics Section, earning his PhD in 1970. He began his academic career as a research assistant, followed by a tenured Lectureship at the Department of Physics at Imperial College. In 1976, he moved to Keele University to join the Research Department of Communication and Neuroscience, later holding the positions of readership and personal chair. In 1988, he became the Head of the department until 1994, and then joined Aston University as a Professor of Vision Sciences. In 1999, he took a personal chair in Visual Computational Neuroscience at UMIST, where he served as Head of the Department until 2003. His current role began in 2006 at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, where he later became the Head of the Sensing, Imaging, and Signal Processing Group in 2010. Foster has published around 200 research articles and authored a book, 'Concise Guide to Communication Science & Engineering.' He is a Fellow of several societies including the Institute of Physics and the Optical Society of America and has received multiple awards for his contributions to the field, including the Verriest Medal in 2017.
