Biography

David Garlan is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University and serves as the Associate Dean for Master’s Programs in the School of Computer Science. He received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1987. Before his academic career, he worked as a software architect in the industry from 1987 to 1990. Garlan is recognized as a founder in the field of software architecture, particularly known for his contributions to formal representation and analysis of architectural designs. He has co-authored influential books on software architecture, including 'Software Architecture: Perspectives Emerging Discipline' and 'Documenting Software Architecture: Views 2005'. In recognition of his contributions to software engineering, he received the Stevens Award Citation for his fundamental contributions to the development and understanding of software architecture and the Outstanding Research Award from ACM SIGSOFT for his significant and lasting contributions to software engineering research. He is a fellow of both IEEE and ACM.
