David Gray was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He received his BA degree in 1981 from Kalamazoo College, a liberal arts institution in the state of Michigan. After spending several years working for a business consulting firm called IHS Markit, he enrolled in the Ph.D. program in economics at the University of Michigan, earning his degree in 1990. He was then hired by the University of Ottawa. Throughout his career, David has participated in a series of foreign study programs, producing his doctoral thesis in France, where he developed a love for the French language and culture. He is passionate about teaching undergraduates and typically teaches around 1,000 students each year in large classes covering introductory microeconomics, macroeconomics, labor economics, and history of economic thought, along with courses in probability, statistics, and econometrics. Over the years, he has won several teaching awards and was a finalist for the University Lecturer Award in Ontario in 2010. His research interests focus on labor economics and labor market policy, including topics related to displaced workers and income mobility. He has held short-term academic appointments in France and consulted on research for Employment Social Development Canada.
