Biography

David Gries is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University. He received his BS in Mathematics from Queens College, NY in 1960, his MS in Mathematics from the University of Illinois in 1963, and his doctorate from the Munich Institute of Technology in Germany in 1966. He served as an assistant professor at Stanford University before joining Cornell's Computer Science Department. Gries has held various leadership roles, including chairing the Computer Science Department from 1982 to 1988 and serving as associate dean for undergraduate engineering programs from 2003 to 2011. His primary research interests include compiler writing and programming methodology. Gries has supervised numerous PhD students, and his student T.V. Raman received the international ACM Dissertation Award in 1994. He has held editorial roles in various academic journals and has authored several influential books in computer science education and programming methodologies. Notable awards include honorary degrees from Miami University and Daniel Webster College, as well as the 1995 ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award.
