Dr. David Hafler

Biography

David Hafler, M.D., is the William S. Lois Stiles Edgerly Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at Yale School of Medicine. With a comprehensive background in biochemistry from Emory University, he earned his M.D. from the University of Miami's School of Medicine. Hafler completed his internship in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins, followed by a neurology residency at Cornell Medical Center-New York Hospital. He has significant expertise in immunology, having trained at notable institutions, including Harvard Medical School and Rockefeller University. Hafler's research focuses on understanding the pathogenesis and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), contributing to the identification of genetic factors affecting immune responses. His leadership has led to advances in MS treatment, highlighted by recognition through various awards like the AAN Dystel Prize and the AAI Steinman Award for Human Immunology Research. As an Honorary Member of the Scandinavian Society of Immunology and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, his contributions continue to shape the field of neurology and immunobiology. Hafler also leads a lab at Yale devoted to pioneering research in MS, constantly seeking innovative therapeutic approaches.
