Biography

David Hanna is an Ernest Rutherford Emeritus Professor of Physics at McGill University. He completed his B.Sc. at McGill in 1975 and earned his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1980. His research interests focus on experimental high energy physics, particularly in particle physics and gamma ray astronomy. Hanna began his research career at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, working on the Intersecting Storage Rings and later participating in the ZEUS collaboration at DESY in Hamburg, Germany. He has been involved in major astrophysics projects and is a founding member of the STACEE collaboration. His contributions include constructing a detector to detect gamma rays from high energy showers, and he has worked on the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME), aimed at measuring the effects of dark energy on the expansion history of the universe. Hanna enjoys building detectors and has made significant contributions to the calibration systems for various experiments. Although currently retired, he has a rich history of mentoring students and contributing to advancements in instrumentation and cosmic ray research.
