Biography

David J. Hayes is a Professor of Practice at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and an affiliated faculty member at Stanford Law School. He specializes in energy law, environmental law, and natural resources policy. Hayes previously served as a White House Special Assistant to President Biden focused on climate policy and was the Senate-confirmed Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. Department of the Interior under Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. In addition to his public service roles, he has been the Executive Director of the State Energy & Environmental Impact Center at NYU School of Law, where he worked with state attorneys general on initiatives related to climate, the environment, and clean energy. Hayes also held the position of Chair of the Board at the Environmental Law Institute and served as a partner and Global Chair of the Environment and Land Resources Department at Latham & Watkins. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and Stanford Law School.
