Biography

David Hills is a Professor Emeritus in the Engineering Science Department at St John's College, University of Oxford. He graduated in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford in 1976 and briefly worked at Tecquipment Ltd, a company that specializes in educational teaching equipment. He later pursued his PhD at Trent Polytechnic, which led to a lectureship position. In 1983, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan and returned to Oxford in 1984. In 2006, he was appointed Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Solids and Structures. Known for his expertise, he delivered the Mech E Donald Julius Groen Prize lecture in 2015 on the topic 'Contacts, Friction Fretting.' In recognition of his contributions to engineering, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2022. David Hills retired from his position in the department in 2023.
