David Housman is a professor of biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received his Bachelor of Arts and PhD from Brandeis University in 1966 and 1971, respectively. Housman has been recognized with the MIT Science Council Teaching Prize in 1992 and has received the National Biotechnology Award from the National Conference on Biotechnology Ventures. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 1988 and of the American Academy of Microbiology since 1994. Additionally, Housman is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He co-founded Genzyme Genetics and Somatix Therapy Corp, and he was instrumental in founding Integrated Genetics, which was acquired by Genzyme in 1989. Housman has also served as Chairman and Principal Scientific Advisor for Variagenics Inc since 1993.
