Biography

David Hulchanski joined the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto in 1991 and has been a Full Professor since 1997, holding the Dr. Chow Yei Ching Chair in Housing. He is cross-appointed to the Graduate Program Planning in the Department of Geography. His research and teaching focus on housing, neighborhoods, community development, social economic rights, and homelessness. He teaches various courses on housing, homelessness, neighborhood change, and community development. He led a team that completed a five-year, $1 million SSHRC funded study on socio-economic and ethno-cultural changes in Toronto’s neighborhoods, which resulted in the key report titled 'Cities Toronto: Income Polarization in Toronto’s Neighborhoods, 1970-2005'. Furthermore, he is the Principal Investigator of a $2.5 million SSHRC Partnership Grant (2012-2023) looking at neighborhood change in seven Canadian cities with international comparisons. He is available for media inquiries across television, radio, and print/online formats.
