Dr. David Hulme

Biography

David Hulme is a Professor of Development Studies at the University of Manchester, where he serves as the Executive Director of the Global Development Institute and CEO of the Effective States and Inclusive Development Research Centre. He has over 30 years of experience in rural development, poverty reduction, microfinance, the role of NGOs in conflict and peace development, environmental management, and social protection. His main research focus includes Bangladesh and he has worked extensively in South Asia, East Africa, and the Pacific. He has directed several major research programs and has been actively involved in numerous international collaborations focusing on global poverty, poverty alleviation, and social welfare policies. His current research interests center on political economy analysis, rural development policy planning, and poverty reduction strategies, with an emphasis on the role of community organizations and NGOs. David is a member of several professional bodies and has served in leadership roles, including as President of the Development Studies Association.
