Biography

David J. Irwin, MD, is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in cognitive neurology and neurodegenerative diseases. His clinical focus includes frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Lewy body dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal syndrome, and multiple system atrophy. Dr. Irwin is particularly interested in young-onset dementia and the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia. His research program emphasizes the interface between clinical symptoms and the underlying neuropathology of neurodegenerative diseases. Aiming to enhance clinical trials, he adopts a methodical approach to identify clinically, pathologically, and genetically homogeneous patient populations for studying emerging disease-modifying treatments. He leverages innovative digital image analysis tools in his research to objectively measure neuropathology using human brain tissue. Dr. Irwin received his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine and completed his residency at Hahnemann University Hospital.
