David Jacques is an Associate Professor and Scientia Fellow at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), leading the Structural Virology Group at the EMBL Australia Node for Single Molecule Science. He completed his Bachelor of Science with honours, majoring in biochemistry and chemistry, before pursuing his PhD at the University of Sydney under the supervision of Professors Jill Trewhella and Mitchell Guss. His research utilizes techniques such as crystallography and small-angle scattering to explore protein structures, contributing to internationally accepted standards for biological small-angle scattering data. In 2012, he received an NHMRC Early Career Fellowship which facilitated his research on HIV capsid dynamics during early infection stages, uncovering interactions at the molecular level. Upon returning to Australia, he established his independent research team focused on the molecular details of host-pathogen interactions using various advanced imaging techniques including crystallography, single molecule fluorescence, and cryo-electron microscopy.
