Biography

David Karlander is a linguist and an Assistant Professor at Uppsala University, Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS), focusing on systems of linguistic thought. His current research project, 'Making Languages, Making Linguistics,' examines the invention and usage of constructed languages such as Esperanto, Interlingua, Novial, and Anglic within the context of twentieth-century linguistics. Funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, he is a fellow of the Pro Futura Scientia XVII Fellowship (2023-2028). His past work encompasses intellectual history and the sociology of language, as well as studies on European minority language policy and the politics of linguistics, specifically concerning Övdalsk and contemporary graffiti. Karlander graduated with an MPhil from Uppsala University in 2011 and obtained his PhD from Stockholm University in 2017. He has held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Hong Kong and the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, and served as a tenured Assistant Professor at Örebro University prior to his current position. Karlander is expected to receive habilitation (docentur) in Scandinavian linguistics by July 2024.
