Biography

David Kohn is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research group focuses on biomimetics and the understanding of how nature designs materials, particularly in the field of biomineralization, which involves studying the formation of bones, teeth, and seashells. The laboratory investigates the organization of mineralized tissues and how this organization affects mechanical competence, aging, diseases, and the susceptibility to fractures. The group seeks to apply insights from biomineralization to develop innovative biomaterials that can control cellular and molecular functions. Kohn also teaches courses on biomaterials, tissue engineering, and biomedical design at the College of Engineering and the School of Dentistry. His long-term, clinically-driven goal is to utilize this knowledge to create techniques for tissue replacement and regeneration.
