Biography

David N. Langelaan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Dalhousie University. He obtained his PhD from Dalhousie University and has been a faculty member since 2016. Dr. Langelaan's research interests center on structural biology, specifically the interactions between proteins and how these relate to cellular signalling and protein assembly. His work often employs sophisticated biophysical techniques, including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, to elucidate molecular mechanisms. He is involved in characterizing hydrophobins, small proteins that play vital roles in filamentous fungi, and has a strong focus on engineering these proteins for industrial applications. Additionally, he investigates the role of the transcription factor MITF in melanoma development, aiming to understand its regulatory functions and implications for disease. Dr. Langelaan is also studying the biosynthesis of rhodoquinone in response to low-oxygen environments, providing insights into microbial adaptation mechanisms. His lab aims to contribute significantly to the understanding of protein interactions and their applications in biotechnology.
