Biography

David C.W. Lau is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. His research is focused on the regulation of fat cell proliferation and differentiation through the influence of paracrine, autocrine, and endocrine factors. He investigates how local factors in fat depots can modulate the effects of circulating hormones, growth factors, and cytokines on obesity and body fat distribution. His work includes characterizing novel adipose-derived factors that impact preadipose cell growth and identifying both positive and negative regulators of adipose tissue growth. Dr. Lau's research also explores the interplay between dietary and genetic factors in nutrient partitioning and the growth of adipose tissue, as well as the role of cytokines and other biological substances in controlling insulin resistance in obesity. His clinical research programs focus on new drug therapies for diabetes and its related complications.
