Biography

David Lines is a professor of Italian Studies at the University of Warwick, focusing on Renaissance philosophy and intellectual history. He has held various doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships in the USA, Italy, the Netherlands, and Germany, and has taught at the University of Miami before joining Warwick in 2006. As a Senior Editor of the Warwick Studies in Renaissance Thought Culture, he contributes significantly to numerous editorial boards for journals and book series. Lines’ research primarily explores the legacy of Greek thought, particularly Aristotelian moral natural philosophy within the institutional contexts of Europe during the Renaissance. His work on Italian universities from around 1350 to 1750 examines the configuration of knowledge, learning, and the development of disciplines. David is also a dedicated mentor for PhD candidates and early career research fellows, guiding new scholars in Renaissance studies. His recent monograph analyzes the evolving disciplines at the University of Bologna, proposing substantial changes in curriculum and pedagogy from 1400 to 1750.
