David L. Lopez, MD, is a dedicated psychoanalyst and faculty member at Columbia University with over 20 years of experience. He has taught courses on adolescent development and diversity, as well as Freud’s theories, while also contributing to diversity initiatives at various levels within the academic community. Growing up in Mexico City, Dr. Lopez has Hispanic Indigenous American roots. He has served as a voluntary faculty member at the joint Cornell and Columbia Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Training Program, where he taught and supervised long-term psychotherapy. For decades, he has maintained a private practice in Greenwich, CT, and held the position of President of the American Academy of Psychodynamic Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis (AAPDPP), where he is currently recognized as a Fellow. His accolades include being a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). Dr. Lopez has served on the editorial boards of Psychodynamic Psychiatry and the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP), and has been a reviewer for The Medical Letter for more than a decade, in addition to being a member of the LGBTQ+ Committee at GAP. He has written extensively and presented nationally and internationally on understanding psychotherapy for gender nonconforming adolescents. As he embarks on a new journey relocating to Philadelphia with his wife, Alex Wortman, he plans to teach at the University of Pennsylvania and the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia.
