Dr. David Ma

Biography

David W.L. Ma is a professor at the University of Guelph in the Department of Human Health Sciences, where he conducts significant research related to nutrition and cancer. He received his Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from the University of Alberta in 2001, focusing on the anticancer properties of conjugated linoleic acids in breast cancer. He furthered his training with postdoctoral research at Texas A&M University investigating the role of omega-3 fatty acids and folate in cancer biology. Notably, Ma has established a research program dedicated to understanding the effects of bioactive fatty acids in cancer prevention, particularly breast cancer. As the founding director of the Guelph Family Health Study, he leads a multidisciplinary team aiming to elucidate the determinants of health in families and young children. His research includes assessing interventions that promote healthy lifestyle habits to combat childhood obesity. Ma is also actively involved in national scientific committees and currently serves as president of the Canadian Nutrition Society, contributing his expertise to various grant review panels and professional initiatives. His work has garnered significant funding support from organizations such as CIHR and NSERC.
