Biography

David MacAlister has been a full-time faculty member at Simon Fraser University since 2002. He is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Criminology and served as the Director of the School from 2016 to 2022. Prior to this, he held the position of Associate Director of Policy Planning within the School. MacAlister has a background in law and criminology, holding law degrees from the University of British Columbia (J.D.) and Queen's University (LL.M.), as well as degrees in criminology from Simon Fraser University (B.A., M.A.). He has been a member of SFU's Senate and the Research Ethics Board. MacAlister served as President of the Western Society of Criminology from 2020-2021 and continues to be the Immediate Past President. He has held the position of Secretary-Treasurer at the International Centre for Criminal Law Reform. His research interests include Criminal Law, criminal procedure and evidence, civil liberties, sentencing, policing, criminal justice accountability, wrongful convictions, and the philosophy of law.
