Biography

David Macdonald CBE, FRSE, is a professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Oxford, where he founded the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) in 1986. His research focuses on the scientific foundations of practical policy solutions for wildlife conservation issues. With a background in behavioral ecology, his work spans various taxa, including mammals and moths, and incorporates interdisciplinary approaches involving environmental economics and social sciences. His research addresses conflicts between people and wildlife, studying predation, infectious diseases, and invasive species, particularly through long-term datasets on badgers, lions, and Ethiopian wolves. He has special expertise in Carnivora, with current projects on Scottish wildcats, lions, tigers, and leopards, exploring the interactions between biodiversity conservation and economic development. Macdonald has held significant roles in conservation organizations, including chairing the UK's fastest-growing conservation education charity, Action Conservation, and serving as Vice President of Wildlife Trusts. He has received numerous accolades, including recognition from Natural England and WWF. In 2025, he will be awarded the Linnean Medal for his contributions to science.
