Biography

David Gouverneur received his Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University in 1980 and his Bachelor of Architecture from Universidad Simón Bolívar, Caracas, Venezuela in 1977. He has served as an Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania since 2010, where he teaches design studios focused on social, environmental, and economic issues in urban settings. His professional practice integrates urban planning projects, particularly in historic districts and areas affected by natural disasters, with a keen focus on formal and informal settlements. Notably, he co-founded the Urban Design program at Universidad Metropolitana in Venezuela and has held various academic leadership roles, including Chair of the School of Architecture at Universidad Simón Bolívar. His research interests include the development of Informal Armatures as alternatives for addressing rampant urbanization in developing countries, and he has published extensively on planning and design for new informal settlements. David has been recognized with the G. Holmes Perkins Award for Distinguished Teaching at PennDesign in 2008 and has led his students to numerous awards in design competitions.
