Dr. David Matyas

Biography

David Matyas is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of New Brunswick. He completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge focusing on international humanitarian law and disaster law as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. His research employs mixed-methods approaches, blending doctrinal analysis with insights from practitioners. Matyas has published in various journals including International Comparative Law Quarterly, Human Rights Quarterly, and Disasters, as well as popular outlets like the Globe and Mail and Maclean's. He is an experienced aid worker with placements in London, UK, Niamey, Niger, and Dakar, Senegal, specializing in disaster risk reduction. Matyas holds a BASc from McMaster University, an MPhil in Development Studies from the University of Oxford, and a BCL/LLB from McGill University, where he was awarded the Elizabeth Torrance gold medal. Following his graduation, he clerked for the Honourable Justice Yves-Marie Morissette at the Quebec Court of Appeal and later for the Honourable Rosalie Abella at the Supreme Court of Canada.
