David McGee joined the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2012. In 2020, he was appointed as Associate Department Head for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and later became the Department Head in 2025. He has been the director of the Terrascope first-year learning community since 2015, engaging approximately 50 students each year in exploring environmental challenges through project-based classes. McGee holds a BA in Geology from Carleton College, an MA in Teaching and Environmental Education from Chatham College, and an MS in Earth and Environmental Sciences from Tulane University. He earned his PhD from Columbia University in 2009 and received the NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, with a joint appointment at the University of Minnesota and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Prior to his graduate studies, he taught middle and high school mathematics and science for seven years. At MIT, McGee has been recognized with the Excellence in Mentoring Award in 2018 and the MIT School of Science Teaching Prize for Undergraduate Education in 2024. In 2022, he was named a MacVicar Faculty Fellow, one of MIT's prestigious teaching honors awarded for innovative contributions to undergraduate education. He has contributed to various Institute initiatives focused on climate, sustainability, and environmental education.
