Professor Dr. David Melhart

Biography

David Melhart is an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern Denmark, working in the SDU Metaverse Lab. His research specializes in affective computing, human-computer interaction, and game user research. Melhart explores the emotional dimensions of interactive digital experiences and develops computational models and tools that capture, interpret, and respond to human affect. His central research pursuit is Human-Centred AI, with a strong focus on games and intelligent systems to support individuals with ADHD and autism through improved attention, self-management, and personalized care. His work includes affect modelling, player experience prediction, and ethically aligned AI in games, as well as contributions to widely adopted affect annotation platforms and influential studies on motivation and engagement prediction in game environments. Melhart has recently emphasized transparent and responsible AI methodologies through interdisciplinary collaboration within psychology, HCI, and machine learning.
