Biography

David Mimno is a professor and chair in the Department of Information Science at Cornell University. He holds a PhD from UMass Amherst and has previously served as the head programmer for the Perseus Project at Tufts and a researcher at Princeton University. Mimno's work has received support from the Sloan Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Science Foundation. He supervises PhD students in both Information Science and Computer Science. His recent publications include studies on how similarity in training data affects few-shot performance in machine learning models, demonstrating that model architecture and hyperparameters are critical, and explore protocols using large language models (LLMs) to evaluate topic quality. In addition to his research, he has organized workshops and tutorials on topics such as large language models and text mining. His teaching includes courses on quantitative methods in Information Science and advanced topic modeling, among others.
