Biography

David Moyes is a Reader in Host-Microbiome Interactions at King’s College London, where he has contributed significantly to the understanding of host-microbe interactions and their implications for health and disease. He obtained his PhD from the Harefield Hospital, Imperial College London, where he researched the relationship between microbial presence and rheumatoid arthritis. His research expertise lies in identifying mechanisms by which epithelial cells discern between commensal and pathogenic forms of microbes, notably Candida albicans, which has led to the discovery of the Candidalysin toxin that plays a role in mucosal disease protection. Moyes and his team focus on the interactions between human hosts and their microbiota, particularly how these interactions can influence disease pathology. Current projects in his lab examine the role of skin-associated microbes in atopic dermatitis and the impact of oral microbiota on cancer progression. Moyes has also studied the dynamics of antimicrobial resistance genes in the microbiome across different populations. His contributions have fostered a greater understanding of the host-microbiome relationship, emphasizing its importance in oral health and systemic diseases.
