Biography

Professor Murray initially studied Engineering Science at Cambridge where he was awarded the Wright prize in engineering, and later qualified in Medicine, training at the Universities of Cambridge, London, and Oxford. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and has a doctorate from the University of Cambridge. Alongside his clinical colleagues and research teams in orthopaedic industry, Professor Murray developed the Oxford Partial Knee, a mobile bearing device that can be implanted using a minimally invasive approach, which has become widely utilized for partial knee replacement. His success in this field has led to a worldwide increase in the use of partial knees and mobile bearings through minimally invasive approaches. He is a member of his hospital's joint replacement team, specializing in knee and hip joints, and leads a team of clinical scientists who work in collaboration with the Department of Engineering Science and Professor Ray Fitzpatrick's group at the Institute of Health Sciences. The team undertakes biomechanical and clinical studies related to the knee and hip, employing anatomical, computer modeling, gait analysis, and x-ray techniques to study normal, diseased, and replaced joints. He has made significant contributions to understanding knee kinematics and has developed predictive methods to prevent joint replacement failures. Professor Murray was instrumental in setting up the national audit of hip replacements and conducted the largest multicenter randomized controlled study of knee replacements in the UK (KAT). His innovative work in the development of new implants and surgical techniques for knee replacement has been recognized with numerous awards from the British and European Research Societies.
