Biography

David Murrell is a theoretical biologist with a keen interest in the questions surrounding ecology and evolution in the natural world. His work often sits at the interfaces of ecology, evolution, and mathematics. During his undergraduate studies, he developed a passion for evolutionary theory and honed his computer programming skills to solve complex equations. His PhD research focused on the evolution of animal and plant dispersal, creating a new framework for understanding how non-random spatial structures of organisms can influence population dynamics. His postdoctoral position at Imperial College London provided him with the opportunity to further develop this framework, and he was awarded a prestigious NERC Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2006. In 2008, he moved to University College London (UCL) and has since expanded his research interests into new areas. In 2009, he established the British Ecological Society Specialist Interest Group on Quantitative Ecology, which continues to thrive within the society.
