Dr. David Muscatello

Biography

David Muscatello is an Associate Professor specializing in infectious diseases epidemiology at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he conducts research focused primarily on pandemic and seasonal influenza epidemiology. He holds a PhD in epidemiology and has extensive experience as a government epidemiologist, particularly in acute disease surveillance utilizing administrative databases, public health intelligence, and biostatistics. Muscatello has contributed to crucial public health responses, including the New South Wales government's management of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2009 influenza pandemic. He is a member of the Australian National Influenza Surveillance Committee and has played significant roles in the World Health Organization's endeavors to estimate the global burden of disease related to influenza. His research interests include time series analysis for estimating mortality and morbidity associated with infectious diseases, and assessing the impact of health policies on populations. He has supervised many public health trainees and is committed to using integrated database approaches for enhancing public health surveillance capabilities.
