Professor David Nethercot OBE, BSc, PhD, DSc, FREng, FIStructE, FICE, FCGI, has over thirty years of experience in research, specialized advisory work, and committee activity in the area of steel and aluminum composite construction. He has previously worked at Cardiff, Sheffield, and Nottingham Universities, where he spent five years as Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His particular interest lies in the influence of connection behavior on the overall performance of framed structures, leading major programs combining experimental and numerical work that underpin design treatments for British and European national standards. Current research interests include progressive collapse in structures and light gauge stainless steel construction. He is the author of four hundred technical papers and has supervised more than forty externally funded research projects internationally. Professor Nethercot has been a keynote speaker in over fifty countries worldwide, served as chairman of the BSI Committee responsible for BS5950, and held the position of past chairman of IABSE's technical committee. He has received several prestigious awards, including the DSc degree in 1993, the OBE in 2006 for services to Structural Engineering, the Charles Massonnet prize in 2008, and the Gold Medal from the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2009.
