Biography

Professor David Nethercot OBE, BSc, PhD, DSc, FREng, FIStructE, FICE, FCGI, is a leading expert in structural engineering with over thirty years of experience in research and specialized advisory work. He heads the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London and has previously held positions at Cardiff, Sheffield, and Nottingham Universities, including five years as Head of the Department at Nottingham. His research interests encompass the influence of connection behavior on the overall performance of frame structures, particularly in relation to steel, aluminum, and composite construction. Nethercot's work has involved major programs that integrate experimental and numerical approaches to guide design treatments for British, European, and national standards. He has authored four hundred technical papers and supervised more than forty externally funded research projects on an international basis. A keynote speaker in over fifty countries, he has chaired critical committees, including the BSI Committee responsible for BS5950, and has received numerous accolades, including the OBE for services to Structural Engineering and various prizes from the Institution of Structural Engineers. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1993 and has served as its Past President and as a Council Member.
