Biography

David Newman-Toker, M.D., Ph.D., is an internationally recognized leader in neuro-otology and acute stroke diagnosis. He graduated with his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital followed by a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship. He then pursued a neuro-otology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and earned his doctoral degree in clinical research methods from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Newman-Toker has been a full-time faculty member at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine since 2002, holding the position of Director of the Division of Neuro-Visual & Vestibular Disorders in the Department of Neurology. His primary research interests focus on eliminating diagnostic errors and improving diagnostic excellence, particularly in the context of stroke diagnosis. Dr. Newman-Toker has published over 165 journal articles and given more than 300 invited lectures. He has served as an expert consultant for various organizations, including the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the National Quality Forum. He was the president of the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine from 2018 to 2020. His approach emphasizes the use of innovative diagnostic strategies to enhance patient safety and quality of care.
