Biography

David Novak is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, holding the J. Richard and Dorothy Shiff Chair in Jewish Studies. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he completed his AB at the University of Chicago in 1961 and later received his MHL from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1964, followed by a PhD in Philosophy from Georgetown University in 1971. Before joining the University of Toronto, he served as the Edgar M. Bronfman Professor of Modern Judaic Studies at the University of Virginia and has held faculty positions at various institutions including Oklahoma City University, Old Dominion University, and Baruch College. Novak is known for his contributions to Jewish law, ethics, and political theory, with a particular focus on Jewish-Christian relations. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and has authored nineteen books, among them "Covenantal Rights," which won the American Academy of Religion Award for the best book in constructive religious thought in 2000. He has been a consulting scholar for various governments and academic institutions, contributing significantly to the fields of religion and ethics through his numerous publications and public lectures.
