Biography

David Paterson is a prominent researcher in the area of cardiac neurobiology, focusing on the communication between the cardiac autonomic nervous system and the heart at the end organ level. His research has established that oxidative stress plays a significant role in uncoupling pre-synaptic and post-synaptic signaling. He has developed innovative methods targeting the enzyme involved in synthesizing nitric oxide-cGMP using a gene transfer approach with cell-specific viral vectors, and employs FRET sensors to study the physiology of these signaling pathways in both normal and diseased hearts. Paterson's work is particularly applied to human iPSC 'disease dish' models of sympathetic neurons and cardiac cells from patients with known cardiac channelopathies. He has a rich academic background, having completed his D.Phil at New College, University of Oxford, and has held various prestigious positions since, including being the Head of the Department of Physiology, Anatomy & Genetics. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of major journals and has been recognized with numerous awards and fellowships, including becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and the American Physiological Society. His influence extends internationally as he has been elected to several prominent scientific bodies and continues to lead significant research initiatives in his field.
