Dr. David Polya

Biography

David Polya is a Professor of Environmental Geochemistry at the University of Manchester, where he leads the Manchester Analytical Geochemistry Unit and serves as Associate Director of the Williamson Research Centre. He completed his PhD at the University of Manchester, focusing on the geochemistry of the Panasqueira tungsten-tin deposit in Portugal. Polya has a diverse background that includes positions as a field hydrogeologist, computer programmer, and geochemical consultant. His current research interests encompass field and laboratory studies in environmental geochemistry, with a particular focus on arsenic contamination in shallow aquifers across Bengal and Southeast Asia. He has coordinated several significant research projects, including the UK-India Water Quality project, and has published over 60 papers in respected journals. Polya's work contributes to understanding and mitigating the impacts of arsenic in groundwater, addressing health risks associated with water quality in vulnerable regions. He is actively involved in organizing international conferences and workshops, focusing on interdisciplinary research and environmental health.
