Biography

David Pratt is a Fellow and Director of Studies in History at Downing College, University of Cambridge. His principal research interests lie in political thought and court culture of the early Middle Ages, with a particular focus on Anglo-Saxon England and the Carolingian world. He has explored topics primarily through the writings surrounding kingship, especially those of West Saxon King Alfred 'the Great' (871-99). In his book, 'Political Thought of King Alfred the Great', he offers a comprehensive study of the political thought at Alfred's court, elucidating the vibrant academic activity centered around texts attributed to Alfred. This work conducts a thorough examination of Old English texts alongside a selective choice of Latin sources, including 'Regula Pastoralis' by Pope Gregory the Great, 'Consolatio Philosophiae' by Boethius, and St. Augustine's writings. His research investigates the implications of these sources within the context of Alfred's political and cultural authority. Currently, Pratt is engaged in a research project that delves into the early history of the English coronation service, exploring its origins during the Anglo-Saxon period and its role in shaping political norms. His forthcoming book, 'English Coronation Ordines of the Ninth and Early Tenth Centuries', aims to provide new editions and translations of the English Coronation Order, further contributing to our understanding of kingship and legislative aspects of Anglo-Saxon society.
