David Ribes is a professor in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington. His research concentrates on sociotechnical aspects of eScience research infrastructures that support scientific investigations and the technological, policy, and social organizational changes associated with them. Ribes's teaching and research interests intersect sociology, philosophy, and history, with a particular focus on Science and Technology Studies (STS). His current work examines the ecology of AIDS research infrastructures and how shifting sociotechnical architectures have transformed the information technologies guiding HIV/AIDS science over the past three decades. He has been a principal investigator for National Science Foundation awards and has participated in grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Sloan Foundation, studying the activities of scientists and exploring new patterns of distributed collaboration. Ribes is an active speaker at conferences discussing research infrastructures and their role in the organization and production of scientific knowledge. Before joining HCDE, he was an assistant professor in the Communication, Culture, and Technology program at Georgetown University.
