Biography

David Richards is the Head of the Department of Physics and a Professor of Physics at King's College London. He previously served as Head of Department from 2007 to 2015 and as Vice-Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences from 2014 to 2022. David has been a leading figure in several EPSRC projects, notably the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Award from 2016 to 2021. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and was Chair of the UK Standing Conference Physics Professors from 2013 to 2015. His educational background includes MA and PhD degrees in physics from the University of Cambridge. Since joining King's College London in 2000, he has held various research fellowships, including at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics and the Cavendish Laboratory. His research focuses on optical spectroscopy and imaging, with particular expertise in fluorescence Raman scattering and plasmonics. He has developed advanced techniques for studying electronic and optical properties of materials and is actively involved in the area of plasmonics for applications in photocatalysis. David's current research aims at understanding how light interacts with plasmonic nanostructures to drive efficient photochemical reactions and explores novel methods in biophotonics and nanophotonics.
