Biography

David Rowitch is Professor and Head of Paediatrics at the University of Cambridge, with a joint appointment at UCSF in Pediatrics and Neurological Surgery. He trained at UCLA Medical School, the University of Cambridge, and Boston Children’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School. Rowitch is a neonatologist and neuroscientist whose laboratory investigates the genetic factors that determine the diversity of glial cell development and the brain's response to injury. His work applies these principles to understand white matter injury in premature infants, brain cancer, and leukodystrophy. He led a human clinical trial for direct neural stem cell transplantation focused on the rare, fatal leukodystrophy called Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease. His contributions to neurobiology have earned him numerous awards, including being appointed as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator in 2008 and a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator in 2016. His research focuses on precision medicine, emphasizing the use of genomic technologies to diagnose and understand the biological basis for rational treatments for rare neurological disorders.
