Biography

Professor Schwartz focused on teaching and research in intellectual property law with a particular emphasis on empirical studies of patents. He joined the faculty in 2015 and served as Associate Dean of Research & Intellectual Life at the Law School from 2019 to 2022. Over his career, he has authored or co-authored more than 30 scholarly articles and has co-authored a casebook and co-edited a handbook on analytical methods in law and economics concerning intellectual property. He is a Co-Principal Investigator on the NSF-funded SCALES project, which aims to increase transparency in court records to facilitate easier access to information for lawyers, legal scholars, and journalists. Before transitioning to academia in 2006, Professor Schwartz practiced intellectual property law, specializing in patents and patent litigation, after starting his career in 1995 as an associate at Jenner & Block. His areas of expertise include patents, intellectual property law, empirical legal studies, law and technology, and law and courts.
