Dr. David Seljak

Biography

David Seljak is a Professor and Acting Chair in the Department of Religious Studies at St. Jerome's University, which is affiliated with the University of Waterloo. He holds a PhD from McGill University, and a Master's and Bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto. His research interests focus on the intersection of religion and identity in Canada, examining how individuals integrate religion into their identities across various dimensions such as gender, race, and ethnicity. Seljak has contributed significantly to the understanding of religious intolerance and discrimination in contemporary society and has served as a consultant on these issues for the Canadian government. His notable projects include examining Christianity, Indigenous spirituality, and minority religious traditions in the context of Canada's evolving religious landscape. Seljak has been involved in various academic editorial and advisory roles and has taught courses on religions in North America, evil, and the complexities of religious diversity. He has received multiple research grants to support his inquiry into religious practices and multiculturalism in Canada, and has been a visiting fellow at notable institutions.
