Dr. David Shumway

Biography

David Shumway is a Professor in the Department of English at Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on American culture and cultural theory, with special interests that include film, popular music, and fiction from the late nineteenth to the twenty-first century. His theoretical interests are primarily concerned with Marxism, media theory, and the politics of literary form. Shumway has authored several important works, including 'Michel Foucault' and 'Creating American Civilization: Genealogy of American Literature.' He edited a collection titled 'World Leonard Cohen' and published the monograph 'American Narrative Realism: Novel, Film, Television, Theater' in January 2026 with Cambridge University Press. He is currently engaged in a project examining the institutional history of Theory and a book on nostalgia.
